A former senior police officer from Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, pleaded guilty on Thursday to charges of accepting bribes while in office.

He Jing, 56, former deputy director of Guangzhou bureau of public security, was tried at Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court for accepting bribes worth more than 6.3 million yuan ($1 million) between 2003 and 2012. He was removed from his post and detained in August.

During his court appearance, the former policeman admitted accepting the bribes and promised to mend his ways.

He is the highest-ranking police officer to go on trial in Guangzhou in recent years.

The court did not issue a verdict on Thursday.
