Over the past five years, 1,598 new grassroots trade union organizations have been formed and 86,000 members admitted to unions in the Tibet autonomous region.

The figures show increases of 36 percent and 57 percent, respectively, according to a work report on Wednesday by the Tibet Federation of Trade Union.

By 2012, there were 5,577 trade unions in Tibet with a total of 235,000 members.

Lobsang Gyikmy, federation chairman, said it will focus on developing new trade unions and union members from privately owned enterprises, economic development zones as well as from areas where companies are concentrated.
