Woman wins lesser claim over hospital negligence

A woman recently received 12,000 yuan ($1,947) from a well-known hospital because her doctors failed to remove gauze bandages from her uterus after an operation. The woman had originally asked for 270,000 yuan in compensation damages but that was rejected by a Beijing court even after her second appeal.

The patient, surnamed Wang, was administered to the Peking Union Medical College Hospital to give birth on December 15, 2010. The following day she underwent a caesarean section and after the operation, her uterus was covered with sterilized gauze bandages.

However, on December 17, when her doctors conducted a surgery intended to take the gauze out, they failed to remove all of it.

Wang sued the hospital for medical negligence, first asking for 270,000 yuan in compensation, but was denied that amount.

On her second attempt, the Beijing No.2 Intermediate People's Court court maintained the first rule to award her a total of 12,000 yuan.
