NANNING -- A police officer has been officially arrested for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl in south China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, according to prosecutors.

The officer surnamed Lyu was arrested along with two "go-betweens" for raping the middle school student. Lyu had been the head of the police station in Dongshan Town, Quanzhou County, according to the Guangxi People's Procuratorate.

In January, the girl was forcibly taken to three hotels in three days and raped by three men. Her family reported the case to the Public Security Bureau of Quanzhou County.

Two other suspects in connection with the case were questioned by police and released, as they were under the age of 16 and played minor roles in the rape.

The case has sparked outrage among netizens, who have demanded severe punishment for the police officer.

In a separate case, a police officer surnamed Hu in northwest China's Gansu Province was fired and expelled from the Communist Party of China on March 30 after a local lawyer claimed he had raped more than 10 girls by paying money to a woman who served as a go-between. The officer has been transferred to judicial authorities.
