QINGDAO - The number of China's licensed lawyers has reached 200,000, a massive increase from several hundred in 1979 when the legal profession was re-established, according to the latest figures disclosed at the ongoing 9th China Lawyer Forum being held here.

The figures also indicated that China currently has more than 250,000 people practicing law and more than 17,000 registered law firms.

During the 11th Five-Year Plan period (2006-2010), the number of litigation, non-litigation and legal aid cases handled by lawyers in China reached around 10 million, 5 million and 1 million, respectively, according to the forum.

Running under a theme of "the 12th Five-Year Plan and lawyers' development," the two-day forum opened Tuesday in the coastal city of Qingdao in eastern Shandong province.

The China Lawyer Forum, initiated in 2000, has become a significant and high-leveled forum during which lawyers from all over China exchange opinions on hot issues and offer suggestions to the judicial department.
