Court to announce sentence of former Chinese planning official

SHIJIAZHUANG - Sentence of Liu Tienan, a former senior economic planning official charged with bribery, is to be announced next Wednesday, according to the Langfang Intermediate People's Court in North China's Hebei province.

The court, where Liu was tried on Sept 24, will announce the verdict at 9:30 am, it said.

Liu, formerly deputy head of the National Development and Reform Commission and head of the National Energy Administration, was accused of taking advantage of his posts for the benefits of other people between 2002 and 2012.

According to the Langfang City People's Procuratorate, Liu had allegedly taken bribes worth 35.58 million yuan ($5.8 million) from five people alone or together with his son Liu Decheng.

The case drew wide attention from the public in China, as several big enterprises were involved.
