Children should not be forced to read books, no matter how classic they are, even though they are more appropriate for adult readers.

The four masterpieces are not appropriate for younger readers in their full form, but could be abridged for teens (as Lamb's 'Tales of Shakespeare' were for younger readers).

The problem with Chinese is that there is not a tradition, covering centuries, of classic literature specifically for children and dealing with sensitive topics that children have to deal with.
