Supervision of TV commercials can lift quality

A report released by the China Consumers' Association in Beijing on Monday says that of the 120 selected television advertisements aired last year, 111 made exaggerated claims for the products being promoted. Comments:

There should be strengthened supervision of the TV commercial industry, with greater scrutiny of the claims made of products, in order to create a better shopping environment for consumers.

Television advertisements have gained a reputation for not guaranteeing the quality of products and making exaggerated or misleading claims about them. False promises along with other issues are overdrawing on the advertising industry's credibility. However, the mess can be cleared up by the new law on advertising along with industry alliances.

In addition to the establishment of a consumer complaint system, government departments and consumers should work together to monitor commercials. And if the broadcaster cannot provide the real names of those responsible for a commercial, then the broadcast platform should bear legal responsibility as well.
