Specialist helps children of Xinjiang

Parents take their children to be treated at the Jingeng Rehabilitation Hospital in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.

Zorigul is a good example. She went to Ruzhou when she discovered her 8-month-old baby had cerebral palsy.

"Henan people made my sadness go away," said Zorigul. "My daughter was cured by Song and I also learned how to make cakes when I was in Henan. Now I own a bakery in Xinjiang."

To treat more children with cerebral palsy from Xinjiang, two rehabilitation centers have been set up in Moyu county and Hotan prefecture over the past two years. Up to now, 517 children have received treatment there.

Heber Haliq, president of Lokman Hospital in Xinjiang, said the hospital has changed a lot as cooperating with Jingeng Rehabilitation Hospital.

"We pay much attention to the newborn babies, following up them regularly and letting more and more Xinjiang people know this disease well," he added.

Marbiya Abai witnessed the treatment of his baby. He said that in the past the little girl could not sit or crawl, but now she could move around much more comfortably.

"We were really lucky to find Song," he said. "I was touched deeply by his warm attitude toward us."

When Song and his colleagues visited Xinjiang for the second time in October, they were surprised with gifts and fruits.

"Some of the families were very poor, but they insisted on offering us their best food," said Song. "Some of them cried when we refused the offer."

Later, the doctor learned that it was impolite to refuse these gifts, so he and his team accepted food from every family. They could barely walk they were so full after their visit, he said.

Hawar Halik, a Xinjiang local, said he calls Song at least twice a day.

"I went to Henan to visit the children and their parents in September. Many parents held my hands and had tears in their eyes when they saw me. At first, I thought that they were mistreated at the hospital, but later I learnt that they crying over Song's kindness," he said.

Seven of the 23 babies with cerebral palsy from Xinjiang have now been cured at Jingeng Rehabilitation Hospital.
