The 6th China Special Olympics was held in Sichuan province on May 11-17. Five athletes from Karamay, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, performed well in the event.

Wang Wei, a leading player in the Xinjiang ping pong team, got both gold and silver medals in different categories during the games. Four athletes, namely Liu Yu, Wang Danli, Chen Chuyuan, and Zhang Pingfeng, won a combined six gold, three silver and one bronze medals in roller skating competitions.

More than 1,200 athletes from 35 teams around China took part in this year's China Special Olympics. Xinjiang sent 25 athletes to participate in four sports categories.

The China Special Olympics aims to encourage mentally disabled people to engage in physical activities and help them build self-confidence. The first China Special Olympics was held in 1987 since which it is held every four years.
