Fujian province's capital of Fuzhou will host a marathon on Christmas Day, with 20,000 participants from five continents all running along the beautiful Minjiang River, a route dotted with landmark sceneries and modern developments.

Coming off of last year's success — the 2015 event attracted 15,000 participants and took place on Dec. 20 — the Fuzhou international marathon will include three categories: full marathon, half marathon, and mini marathon (five kilometers). Adjustments to the running route have been made to include more local highlights.

The Minjiang River is the largest river in Fujian, with its own entrance to the sea. Before it empties into the East China Sea, north of Fuzhou, it branches into two on the south side of downtown Fuzhou, with Nantai Island (Cangshan district) positioned in between.

This year's marathon route goes along the banks of the north branch of the river's Fuzhou section, so runners will be able to appreciate the chic modern developments, tranquil natural landscapes, and traditional architecture in the Cangshan, Gulou, Taijiang, and Mawei districts.

The city has recruited nearly 2,000 volunteers to ensure the event's smooth operation. There will be 14,000 security personnel in place on the day of the race, Dec 25. Facilities providing food and beverages, medical care, and mobile toilets will be installed along the route.
