Fujian will boost connections with Hunan province for the purpose of joint tourism development, according to an announcement at a promotion titled "Refreshing Fujian and Happy Hunan" in Hunan's Changsha city on Dec 25.

At the meeting, Fujian tourism authorities outlined the province's rich tourism resources, including cross-Straits exchange, and highlighted the tea and Hakka culture.

The two provinces also signed an agreement to develop multiple tourist routes and promote the red tourism industry.

Fujian has a significant place in China's "red history." In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Fujian was a major "red base" for the Red Army, which led to its many current "red scenic spots."

Hunan has about 50 tourist destinations with historical significance related to Chinese Communism, making it the backbone of "Red Tourism" in China. It is the birthplace of many revolutionary figures such as Mao Zedong and Liu Shaoqi.

With the launch of the Xiangtang-Putian Railway (Xiangtang in Nanchang, Putian in Fuzhou) and the Shanghai-Kunming Railway, the travel time between Fujian and Hunan has been cut from 18 to five hours.

Hunan is Fujian's seventh largest source of visitors. In 2014, Fujian welcomed more than 2 million tourists from Hunan.
