Design scheme revealed for Xiamen's new airport on Dadeng Island

A design scheme jointly provided by the China Architecture Design Group and the CPG Corporation from Singapore was chosen for Xiamen's new airport on Dadeng Island.

The design incorporates elements that reflect Xiamen's local history, economy and culture. The design also takes full consideration of operation efficiency and costs in aviation and non-aviation businesses that will operate in the new facility.

From a bird's eye view, the terminal building consists of one main building and six radial-style airside corridors. The layout maximizes passenger capacity and operation efficiency, and also shortens passengers' walking distances.

When viewed from horizon, the Minnan-style architecture—known as Dacuo (大厝)—becomes visible. "Dacuo" is a palatial traditional residence style in the Minnan area (the southern part of Fujian Province). The roof of the terminal building features uplifting elements in the classic Dacuo style.

Xiang'an International Airport, Xiamen's second airport, is scheduled to begin construction at the end of 2016 and come into operation in 2020.

The project will be carried out in two phases, covering a total of 46 square kilometers in Xiang'an District.

In the first phase, the core area of the new airport will be built on a nine-square-kilometer area on Dadeng Island. This area will include the airfield with two airstrips and a 0.54 million m2 terminal building that can accommodate up to 45 million passengers per year.

The airport will eventually include four airstrips with handling capacity expected to increase to 75 million people after the completion of the second phase of construction.
