Monastery restoration

China Daily | Updated: 2012-03-21 14:36

The government of Jinjiang district of Chengdu, Sichuan province, will invest more than 17 billion yuan ($2.7 billion) in 36 reconstruction projects.

A highlight of the projects is the restoration of the Daci Monastery in downtown Chengdu, which has a history of some 1,400 years. It was once the largest Buddhist building in China.

The monastery restoration project has a construction area of 400,000 square meters.

The project includes more than 100 mural paintings. Some date back to the late Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907).

The project will be completed by the end of next year.
