The songs of Nanxi Haozi are popular in Qianjiang District, Chongqing Province. Born from the Working Haozi and Mountain Song Haozi of Tujia Minority, over time the songs of Nanxi Haozi gradually developed a special style.

The lyrics are mostly improvised and are immovable in tune and the pattern of singing. The most interesting of Nanxi Haozi is when one person sings others respond in different voice parts.

The songs recount local history, geography and folklore, which provide a wealth of information on ancient culture.

But now, there are only ten people in the entire Qianjiang region who can sing these songs, and they are getting old. This music is in danger of dying out and needs to be protected.
