For residents in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, osmanthus trees are a marker of the changing seasons. Instead of red maple leaves heralding the arrival of autumn, residents are nostalgic for the first sweet whiff of osmanthus fragrance.

More than a million osmanthus trees grow across Nanjing, lining roads and filling residential compounds and parks. They have become a cultural sign of the city.

This video shows the 150-year-old blooming osmanthus trees at Zhanyuan Garden.
