For many older people, watching television at home is a simple way to pass the time, often with little more than a remote control in hand.
Now, artificial intelligence is giving that familiar routine a new twist.
On Sept 23, Beijing Gehua CATV Network Co Ltd, the country's first listed company in the domestic cable television network industry, unveiled "Dabao" (Big Baby), an AI-powered set-top box designed for older adults. Shaped like a small robot, the device is intended to make television and other everyday services easier to use.
Instead of navigating a remote, users can simply talk to Dabao. They can ask it to turn on the TV, switch to a favorite program, such as the 1987 adaptation of Dream of the Red Chamber, or check the weather forecast.
More than a TV assistant, Dabao is designed around the daily routines of older people living at home. Its AI functions are integrated into a range of household and elderly-care services, according to the company.
An emergency feature is also in development. If a user experiences a sudden health emergency, a single press can connect them to the 120 emergency medical service, potentially saving valuable time for treatment, the company said.
