The drama 2026 Attitude Ti62A, jointly produced by the China Science and Technology Museum and the China Coal Mine Art Troupe, will hold 10 performances at the museum from Sept 29. It is another theatrical work created through the deep integration of "science plus art" by the two parties, following the earlier stage play The Glory of China.
2026 Attitude Ti62A draws on the true research and development history of the Fendouzhe, or Striver, the deep-sea manned submersible's crewed cabin, focusing on the team's story at the Institute of Metal Research affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which independently developed the Ti62A titanium alloy crewed cabin.
The production innovatively uses a drawer-style stage to jump across time and space, connecting multiple scenes, including tackling key welding challenges, memories of research institutes, and spiritual retrospectives. It breaks away from the "lofty and perfect" heroic narrative. The scientific researchers on stage also become confused and troubled, and face reality tests. At the same time, they hold fast to the bottom line of scientific truth-seeking.
From leaders stepping forward to bear the risks of decision-making to young scientific researchers struggling to make choices between ideals and reality, to senior academicians willingly serving as ladders for others and rewarding and encouraging younger scholars, the play fully unfolds a group portrait of three generations — old, middle-aged, and young — of materials researchers striving to succeed.
The play brings real conflicts and choices on the front lines of scientific research onto the theatrical stage through artistic expression and the essence of the scientists' spirit: patriotism, innovation, truth-seeking, dedication, collaboration, and education.
Jin Dong, head of the China Coal Mine Art Troupe, serves as the artistic director. Young creators such as Hao Shanshan, Luo Yazhuo, and Wang Runjie also join forces.
Relying on the China Science and Technology Museum's role as a base for science popularization performances, the play transforms the weighty spirit of scientists into a perceptible and empathetic stage narrative, guiding audiences, especially young people, to understand the power of ordinary people's perseverance behind self-reliance and to cultivate firm ideals and beliefs in advocating science and taking responsibility for serving the country.
