Guizhou publishes monograph on hypertensive comorbidities in pregnancy
A monograph on hypertensive comorbidities in pregnancy, edited by a leading Guizhou specialist, has been published, marking a breakthrough in the province's efforts to build a theoretical framework for diagnosing and treating such conditions.
Unlike traditional medical books focused on a single disease, the monograph examines hypertensive pregnancy disorders and related comorbidities covering the periods before, during, and after pregnancy, local news outlet Tianyan News reported. It focuses on maternal and infant safety and provides systematic guidance on early screening, prevention, and treatment of eclampsia and related conditions, while combining basic medical theory with clinical practice.
"The book is of great significance for the timely detection and diagnosis of hypertension-related conditions in pregnant and postpartum women," said Yu Zhenqiu, editor of the book and director of the hypertension department at the Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University.
Hypertensive pregnancy disorders have long been a major challenge to maternal health in Guizhou, where the maternal mortality rate sat above the national average in 2016. To alleviate the situation, the province established a hypertension diagnosis and treatment center the following year. It went on to build a five-tier prevention and control network, led by Yu, and regularly provides specialized training for primary healthcare workers.
The efforts have produced measurable results. Since 2019, Guizhou's maternal mortality rate has stayed below the national average. In 2023, the national maternal mortality rate dropped to 15.1 per 100,000, and in Guizhou, it decreased to 7.17 per 100,000.
