Gyirong mudslide most lethal natural disaster in Aug
A mudslide originating on the Nepalese side of the border on Aug 26 left 562 people dead or missing near Gyirong Port in Gyirong county, Shigatse, Xizang autonomous region, accounting for the vast majority of deaths and missing people caused by natural disasters nationwide in August, according to official figures released on Friday.
The office of the national commission for disaster prevention, reduction and relief and the Ministry of Emergency Management released an assessment of natural disasters across China in August.
Authorities said further verification of the disaster situation is continuing.
As per preliminary statistics, natural disasters affected 12.62 million people across the country to varying degrees during the month, with 595 people reported dead or missing.
Typhoons, floods and geological disasters were the main natural hazards in August, while droughts, wind and hail, earthquakes and other disasters also occurred to varying degrees.
