China strengthens port safety measures following mudslide disaster

China's National Immigration Administration has called for a comprehensive screening and rectification of all types of safety risks at ports, alongside stronger emergency preparedness and interdepartmental coordination to ensure port security and stability.

At a recent meeting of the administration's Party leadership group, officials emphasized the need to strengthen closed-loop safety management at ports and improve information sharing, joint inspections, coordinated enforcement, and emergency response among relevant departments.

The meeting called for thorough checks of potential risks and hazards, improvements in contingency plans for different types of disasters, and increased emergency response drills.

The emphasis on port safety follows a major mudslide disaster near Gyirong Port in the Xizang autonomous region. At around 10:30 am on Aug 26, a mudslide occurred on the Nepalese side of the border, causing major casualties and leaving people missing in the Gyirong Port area of Gyirong county, Shigatse.
