On the morning of Sept 13, the 2026 Urumqi Marathon drew 15,000 runners from across China to the capital of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.

The race started at 7:30 am at the south gate of the Xinjiang International Convention and Exhibition Center, with runners taking part in the full marathon, half marathon, and other events. Beyond competition, participants had an opportunity to experience the city's culture and hospitality.

Ayiken Bahetibieke won the men's full marathon in 2 hours, 25 minutes, and 58 seconds, while Wei Chunhua took the women's title. Liu Jun and Wang Yanglu won the men's and women's half marathon, respectively.

The marathon route was designed to showcase Urumqi's urban landscape. The course connected modern landmarks, urban neighborhoods, and cultural venues. Organizers had adjusted the route based on feedback from previous runners.

More than 60 music and cheering stations were set up along the course, featuring traditional ethnic singing, dancing, and instrumental performances from Xinjiang.

The event also incorporated local food, culture, and technology into the event. Before the race, participants could sample local fruits and take part in interactive technology activities at the race-materials collection venue. A food area featured Xinjiang specialties.

The race's visual design drew on local cultural symbols, including snow lotus-themed medals, sky-blue race shirts, and finisher bags inspired by the shape of a traditional Xinjiang flatbread.
