2 dead, 1 missing after mudslide in Shaanxi

Two people have been confirmed dead while one person remains missing after a mudslide struck Zhashui county in Shangluo, Shaanxi province, China Media Group reported on Saturday.

The mudslide occurred on Wednesday in Xingping township while residents of a household were clearing accumulated water near their home following days of persistent heavy rainfall.

As of 9:20 am on Saturday, one of the two previously missing individuals was found and confirmed dead, raising the death toll to two.

Search and rescue teams have expanded their operations along riverbanks in an effort to locate the remaining missing person, while local authorities are making arrangements for the bereaved families.

Zhashui experienced continuous heavy rainfall from July 30 to Wednesday, with three rivers in the county recording five flood peaks that exceeded their warning levels.
