Shanghai will host the final of the Starbucks China Barista Championship later this year, bringing together the country's 66 regional champions in a competition celebrating coffee craftsmanship, innovation and customer service.
Launched in 2009, the annual event has become the premier stage for more than 70,000 Starbucks baristas across China, offering them the opportunity to showcase their professional expertise and passion for coffee.
The North China regional final took place in Beijing on Aug 2. Following multiple rounds of rigorous selection and assessment, the top performers will advance to the national final, where they will compete for the championship title and the chance to wear Starbucks' iconic brown apron — the symbol of a Coffee Master and a mark of exceptional coffee expertise.
This year's championship introduces a refreshed format that places greater emphasis on baristas' overall capabilities, including coffee storytelling, latte art, beverage innovation, bar operation standards and customer engagement.
The competition aims to highlight skills developed through daily store operations. Participants are encouraged to draw inspiration from their interactions with customers and local communities, transforming real-life experiences into unique coffee stories and creations.
Contestants will compete in three major categories: coffee brewing, latte art and creative beverage innovation. In the brewing challenge, baristas use Starbucks-standard equipment and coffee beans to demonstrate their knowledge of coffee origins, processing methods and roasting techniques.
The latte art challenge tests precision and creativity, with competitors creating patterns using oat milk and whole milk. In the creative beverage segment, baristas develop original drinks based on espresso, cold brew or brewed coffee, using existing store ingredients and equipment.
At the national final, competitors will take on additional challenges, including blind tastings, peak-hour service simulations, brewing presentations and coffee demonstrations.
To help participants prepare, Starbucks China has invited award-winning baristas to provide professional coaching in brewing, latte art, beverage innovation and storytelling.
Ahead of the final, the 66 regional champions are also bringing the "champion experience" to customers by sharing their expertise and signature coffee moments in their own stores.
