Chinese and US police achieve major victories in practical cooperation

Chinese and United States law enforcement agencies have achieved tangible results in practical cooperation this year, advancing joint efforts in counternarcotics, combating telecom and online fraud, and fugitive repatriation, according to the Ministry of Public Security.

The cooperation followed the important consensus reached by the two heads of state and reflects renewed engagement on transnational crime, it said on Friday.

The ministry said bilateral counternarcotics cooperation has become increasingly institutionalized, leading to the joint investigation of several major cross-border cases, including a drug smuggling and trafficking case involving suspects led by a man surnamed Guo and a transnational new psychoactive substances trafficking case involving suspects led by a man surnamed Gong. The operations disrupted drug trafficking routes linking China and the US.

Cooperation has also expanded in the fight against telecom and online fraud. In April, police from China, the US and the United Arab Emirates carried out a joint international law enforcement operation targeting telecom fraud syndicates operating in Dubai. The operation dismantled nine scam compounds and arrested 276 suspects, effectively disrupting a major cross-border fraud network.

The ministry highlighted progress in fugitive repatriation as another key area of cooperation.

In April, US authorities repatriated Han, a Chinese national suspected of drug smuggling and trafficking, marking the first drug-related fugitive handed over by the US to China in recent years. The transfer was completed through immigration enforcement cooperation based on information provided by China's narcotics control authorities.

The US authorities also transferred a man surnamed Liu, who is suspected of kidnapping and murdering Chinese citizens overseas, to Chinese law enforcement, the ministry said.

China, for its part, recently apprehended a US citizen wanted through an Interpol Red Notice for serious violent crimes. On Thursday, Chinese police handed the fugitive over to US law enforcement officers at Shanghai Pudong International Airport following a detailed investigation.

The ministry said Chinese police will continue to deepen practical cooperation with the US and other countries, improve mechanisms for intelligence sharing and joint investigations, and intensify efforts to combat transnational crimes in accordance with the law to better safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of people in all countries.
