Deep in the secluded river valleys of Lincang Lancangjiang Provincial Nature Reserve grows a rare plant — the Yunnan large lily.

Rooted alongside streams that run through pristine mountain terrain, it takes four to six years of slow growth to bloom for a single season, with less than one out of a thousand seeds able to germinate. Incredibly strict natural requirements, its distinctive downward-hanging blossoms, and its reliance on noctuid moths for pollination make every bloom a miracle of nature.

Every year, people journey deep into the mountains to document its blossoms, driven not by mere novelty-seeking, but by awe and reverence.

The elegant bloom of one Yunnan large lily serves as the finest indicator of a thriving mountain ecosystem, and a tender testament to biodiversity conservation in Shuangjiang county, Yunnan province.
