Post flooding, county in Guangxi confirms drowned pig disposal to public
In response to public concern, authorities in Binyang county, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, confirmed in a notice late Thursday that they are disposing of pig carcasses from a livestock farm flooded by Typhoon Maysak.
Images of pig carcasses floating at the flooded farm had circulated online.
After the farm was inundated, local government and agricultural officials evacuated all workers, sealed off the site and began round-the-clock patrols to prevent the carcasses from drifting away and decomposing in unknown locations. Deep floodwaters had initially blocked vehicle access and delayed cleanup operations.
As waters receded on Thursday, township authorities and the county's agriculture bureau began removing the carcasses and disinfecting the premises. A nearby site was designated for deep burial, with excavators digging trenches in accordance with biosecurity requirements, according to the notice.
The disposal work is expected to be completed by Saturday. Patrols will continue throughout the operation.
Insurance assessors have also begun evaluating the losses to facilitate compensation for the farmer, the county government said.
