A patient lies in a hospital bed after surgery, too weak to move freely and unable to wash their hair on their own. Days pass. Their body is recovering, but even the smallest routines of daily life feel out of reach.

Then someone arrives with a 28-inch suitcase. Inside are a portable folding basin, a hair dryer, towels and shampoo — enough to turn a hospital ward or bedroom into a temporary hair-washing station.

This is the idea behind China's emerging mobile hair-washing service, which is drawing attention in several cities as a practical form of care for people who cannot easily wash their hair themselves.

The service mainly targets post-surgery patients, bedridden individuals and women who need extra care before or after childbirth. Many service providers are young people in their 20s, traveling between hospital wards and residential communities with suitcases in tow.

A 22-year-old service provider surnamed Zhu, based in Yinchuan, Ningxia Hui autonomous region, started the business after seeing similar services promoted on social media. On busy days, he handles eight or nine orders. Prices range from 88 yuan to 168 yuan ($12.97 to $24.77), and about 60 percent of his orders are in hospitals.

He told Jiupai News, a Hubei-based media outlet, that many patients had gone one or two weeks without washing their hair. After the service, they often feel noticeably more comfortable, which gives him a sense of purpose in the work.

"For people who need it, hair care is not about beauty. It is one of the most basic parts of daily life," Zhu said. "What we do is help them regain a little dignity during recovery."
