The red pagoda printed on the classic Chinese takeout box emoji is more than a generic piece of clip art. It is the Glazed Pagoda of the Great Bao'en Temple in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, a wonder that Europeans once called the Porcelain Tower.

The tower was once a visual symbol through which the Western world understood China. Today, it has been transformed from a historical building into an open platform for cross-cultural exchange.
