A charity fashion show was held in Yantai, Shandong province, on Saturday to mark International Rare Disease Day and launch a new support network for affected families. The event brought together nearly 300 patients with rare diseases, medical experts, business representatives and volunteers.

Through diverse and creative formats such as a fashion show, patient talk shows, a photography exhibition showcasing patients' lives, seminars, and hospital's free clinics, the event sought to break down public barriers to understanding rare diseases. It created a space of empathy, respect, and support for the rare disease community in Yantai and beyond.

Rare diseases, often genetic or immune-related, affect a small percentage of the population. With nearly 10,000 types identified worldwide, they pose significant challenges, including delayed diagnosis, high treatment costs, and social isolation. The World Health Organization recognizes the prevention and control of rare diseases as a global health priority.

Jiang Haiming, deputy director of the Yantai Municipal Health Commission, said the city is working to strengthen rare disease diagnosis and treatment. He pledged continued support for collaboration between medical institutions and charitable organizations to ensure equitable and accessible healthcare for all patients.
