FUZHOU -- Fujian province in East China has activated a Level-IV emergency response to cope with torrential rains, the provincial headquarters for flood control and drought relief has said.

On Sunday morning, the provincial meteorological service forecast that Zhangzhou, Putian, Quanzhou, Xiamen and other parts of Fujian will experience torrential rains on Sunday, with wind gusts of up to force 10 (24.5-28.4 meters per second) for some areas. It also forecast that heavy rain would soak central and southern Fujian on Monday and Tuesday.

The headquarters urged local authorities to closely monitor the impact of heavy rainfall, promptly initiate or adjust flood control emergency responses, and ensure the safety of people's lives and property.

China has a four-tier emergency response system for flood control, with Level I being the most severe.
