On June 8, after the classical ballet La Bayadere concluded its three performances at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, Feng Ying, the artistic director and head of the National Ballet of China, announced that Xu Yan had been promoted to the position of principal dancer of the troupe.

"After 14 years of hard work and dedication, Xu Yan has relentlessly pursued her artistic goals. She is a role model for the new generation of dancers at the National Ballet of China," said Feng.

After graduating from the dance school affiliated to the Shanghai Theatre Academy in 2011, Xu joined the National Ballet of China the same year.

She has played leading roles in the troupe's productions, such as Swan Lake, The Red Detachment of Women and Giselle. In 2022, she participated in the Ballet Creative Workshop, a platform launched by the National Ballet of China, making her debut as a choreographer. Since then, she has choreographed a series of contemporary works with varied styles, showcasing her creative talent.

"I am grateful for everything that has happened here during the past 14 years. I appreciate the company's gesture of giving me enough time and opportunity to help me grow," said Xu.

"The pursuit of art is endless. This honor is both a recognition and a responsibility, motivating me to hold myself to even higher artistic standards."
