The just finished three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday, from Saturday to Monday, saw a booming tourism market, with both tourist number and consumption increasing.

Latest figures unveiled by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism show that the domestic tourism destinations received about 119 million visits during the holiday, up 5.7 percent year-on-year. These tourism visits generated consumption of over 42.7 billion yuan ($5.94 billion), a year-on-year rise of about 5.9 percent.

The ministry said destinations with strong Chinese cultural vibes and diversified celebrations such as Guangdong and Hunan provinces highlighting thrilled dragon boat races were among the top choices for travelers to spend the holiday.

The ministry added that the holiday, overlapping with the International Children's Day, also saw increase of family trips. And some experiencing events such as wrapping up zongzi — sticky rice dumplings with bamboo leaves — and making scented sachet were popular among families.
