Extraordinary ink

In the later stage of his life, artist Huang Binhong (1865-1955) still embraced a hardworking lifestyle and his daily routine included collecting and studying art materials, researching objects of antiquity, and sharing knowledge with friends by exchanging letters.

His lifelong investment in extensive reading, researching and painting allowed Huang to establish a unique style of Chinese painting, sealing him a position in the first rank of ink artists in the 20th century.

A Man in the Brace of Huangshan Mountain, an exhibition at the Anhui Museum, Hefei, Anhui province, celebrates Huang's creativity and innovations to modernize ink art, which, at first, was not well recognized. The exhibition, until March 2, is in memory of the 160th anniversary of Huang's birth.

On show are several landscape paintings hailing the magnificence of Huangshan Mountain, close to the Shexian county where Huang grew up. The extravagant natural views motivated him to explore ink as a medium to depict the world.

9 am-5 pm, closed on Mondays.268, Anqing Lu, Hefei, Anhui province. 0551-6282-0945.
