China responds to media reports on launch of new frigate
China's defense ministry on Thursday responded to media reports that the country has launched its first Type 054B guided missile frigate.
Ministry spokesman Wu Qian said the development of main combat ships and other equipment by the People's Liberation Army Navy is a "normal arrangement" for the sake of national security and the overall development of the PLA Navy.
He said new equipment will be used to "safeguard China's sovereignty, security and development interests" and to "better uphold global and regional peace and stability."
Wu added that China "always follows the path of peaceful development and unswervingly pursues a national defense policy that is defensive in nature."
The Type 054B is a new class of frigate that is larger and more capable than previous models.
