Woman receives 20,000 yuan for ex-husband's infidelity

A woman received 20,000 yuan ($2,700) in compensation for mental anguish after she discovered her ex-husband's infidelity seven months after their divorce.
According to a report by the Xiaoxiang Morning Herald, a media outlet based in Hunan province, a court in Hunan's Ningxiang disclosed the case on Tuesday.
According to the court, in March 2021, the woman and her husband divorced due to inconsolable differences. Only seven months later in October that year, the man posted on WeChat Moments to share the news of his daughter's birth. It was then that woman discovered her ex-husband's infidelity during their marriage. She sued for a mental damage compensation of 50,000 yuan.
The court ruled that there is an obligation for spouses to remain loyal to each other, which is a legal obligation. In this case, the man had an extramarital affair during the marriage, which caused emotional harm to the woman.
But the compensation amount should be determined based on factors such as the degree of fault, the severity of the harm caused and the local economic development level.
The court ruled that the ex-husband should pay 20,000 yuan in compensation for the woman's mental damage.
