Rainstorms cause huge losses in Northeast China

SHENYANG -- Persistent rainstorms have affected more than 5,500 people and caused huge economic losses in Northeast China's Liaoning province, according to the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters Sunday.
From 8 pm Friday to 7 am Sunday, torrential rains affected Liaoning's western and southern areas, with the average rainfall in the province reaching 60.7 mm.
A total of 5,590 people were transferred to safety as of 6 am Sunday and six reservoirs there have seen water levels exceed flood season marks and are currently discharging water orderly.
The affected crop area is estimated at 54 hectares, some houses are damaged, and the direct economic losses have surpassed 1.4 million yuan (about $195,900).
