Guizhou's Huamao village turns Long March spirit into practices of rural vitalization
Huamao village in Zunyi, Guizhou province, was once poor and underdeveloped. Today, it is lush and thriving. In 1935, the Zunyi Meeting helped set the course for the Red Army's Long March. Today, the spirit of the Long March, combined with a practical, hardworking ethos, is helping write a new chapter in the village's rural vitalization.
Villagers who have returned to their hometown have opened farmhouse restaurants, while traditional paper-making has been transformed into cultural and creative products. Huamao's annual per capita disposable income has risen from 12,600 yuan ($1,883) a decade ago to more than 29,600 yuan. Last year, the village received 710,000 visits, generating total tourism revenue of more than 24 million yuan. Times change, but the resolve to endure hardship and never give up remains.
