At the auditorium's center is a triple-height auditorium that can accommodate up to 1,300 people in raked seating; the chairs can also retract to yield a flat floor for exhibitions and events. "The sound quality for Shaw Auditorium was very important to our client - we worked with Marshall Day Acoustics to get it right," says architect Claude Bjer Godefroy of Henning Larsen, a Danish firm known for its sustainable and humanistic approach to building design.

Godefroy shows the way to a backstage area where performing artists can prepare or rest. "These are some of the largest back-of-house areas in the city, as HKUST requested for large props to be staged and quickly wheeled on the set," he explains.
