Too cool for school

Opened in November with a pair of free public concerts by the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Shaw Auditorium at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is a striking addition to the campus. Designed by the Hong Kong office of Copenhagen-headquartered Henning Larsen, the building is a transformer: by night, a concert hall; by day, a classroom for the school's art program.
Its form reads as a series of white oval discs staggered on top of each other with continuous ribbons of windows sandwiched in between. These are protected by cantilevered overhangs that protrude or recede to shade balconies on the upper two levels. Immediately within the perimeter are open lounges and areas where students can study or meet up.
