TAIPEI -- Taiwan reported 457 local COVID-19 infections on Sunday, including 287 new local cases and 170 cases delayed by a reporting backlog of confirmed test results, the local disease monitoring agency said.

This is the eighth consecutive day that the island's daily number of new local infections has exceeded 200.

The new reported cases brought the total number of confirmed cases in Taiwan to 4,322, of which over 3,000 are locally transmitted infections reported over the past 10 days.

Taiwan also confirmed six deaths from the disease on Sunday, bringing the death toll from COVID-19 to 23.

The six dead include five men and one woman, who passed away between May 20 and 21. All but one had chronic illnesses, the agency said.

Amid the surge in COVID-19 infections, more measures have been taken to contain the spread of the disease. All wet markets, night markets and convenience stores in Taipei have been asked to suspend dine-in services and provide takeaway services only. Starting Monday, all drink shops in Taipei will also be only allowed to offer takeaway services.

Meanwhile, Taiwan on Sunday recorded three new imported COVID-19 cases from the Philippines, Indonesia and Denmark.
