Yang Jiechi Speaks by Phone with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo

On 15 April, Yang Jiechi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, took a phone call from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo of the United States.

Yang noted that since the 27 March phone call between President Xi Jinping and President Donald J. Trump, the two sides have, following the important understandings reached between the two Presidents, stayed in close communication on combating COVID-19. China is ready to continue sharing information and experience with the US side on combating the virus, and carry out cooperation on this front. Yang stressed the importance for the two sides to work together to implement the deliverables of the Extraordinary G20 Leaders' Summit on COVID-19, keep the global supply chains stable and uphold global economic and financial stability.

Yang pointed out that with the whole world battling the virus, a sound, healthy and stable China-US relationship is of vital importance. China expects the US to work with China to implement the important understandings reached between the two Presidents, focus on cooperation and remove any interference to advance China-US relationship along the right track. This would best serve the fundamental interests of the two peoples and meet the expectation of the international community.

Pompeo noted that COVID-19 is a common challenge facing the international community. He expressed that the US side is ready to work with China to implement the understandings reached between the two Presidents, step up cooperation against the virus, and continue communication and coordination on the US-China relationship.
