Golden Globe winnerThe Farewell hits Chinese silver screen today

The Farewell, a bittersweet Chinese-American family comedy-drama that recently scooped the Best Actress – Musical or Comedy for its leading actress Awkwafina at the 77th Golden Globe Awards, is set for theatrical release across the Chinese mainland today.

Partly based on Chinese-American director Lulu Wang's life experiences, the film follows a Chinese family who, upon learning that their grandmother has only a short while left to live after being diagnosed with lung cancer, decide to keep her in the dark and schedule an impromptu wedding for a family reunion before she passes away.

The online ranking site Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a rare 98 percent rating, saying that it "deftly captured complicated family dynamics with a poignant, well-acted drama that marries cultural specificity with universally relatable themes."
