A training course was recently offered to teachers in Beijing, with the aim of bringing traditional Chinese opera into primary and middle schools.

The course, selected in 2018 as one of the projects to be funded by the Beijing Culture and Art Foundation, is conducted by the Beijing Municipal Education Commission and organized by the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts and the Beijing Institute of Education.

The one-week course was attended by 60 teachers of physical education and dancing from the middle and secondary schools of Beijing.

Previously, the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts worked on creating these opera exercises, aiming to incorporate the fundamental skills of traditional Chinese opera into students’ daily physical exercises.

The projects aim to bring traditional opera into the majority of Chinese middle and secondary schools by the year 2020, in order to popularize Chinese culture.

The choreography for the exercises was completed in November 2018, and was piloted among 200 students at the Beijing Jinbu Primary School and the Beijing No. 44 middle school.
