Nalan Xingde (1655-85) is not only an elite of the times, but also a symbol of Chinese culture. Although he is short-lived, he tells an extraordinary life story with far-reaching influence. With his graceful poetry style and talents, he deserves lofty praise by scholar Wang Guowei who said, "He is the one and only remarkable talent since the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127). His celebrated dictum, "If time could stop at the moment when we first met", has spread through the ages.
