Xinhua | Updated: 2013-04-29 01:16

PARIS - At least two people were killed and 14 others injured in an explosion on Sunday morning at a four-story residence building in Reims, northeastern France, local media said in latest reports.

Local authorities said the explosion which caused the collapse of the building was likely to be caused by a gas blast. Several children were injured in the explosion although authorities did not specify their ages.

In a statement from the Elysee Palace, French President called the explosion "a terrible tragedy."

"The President of the Republic extends his condolences to the families of the victims and solidarity to the city of Reims," said the statement, adding that "all resources are mobilized to rescue  and secure the area."

The accident came just three weeks after four people were killed in another gas explosion in a nearby area.
