Guam's duty-free shopping is distinct from most island getaways' in that it's not only confined to airports but also can be found downtown. Many stay open well into the wee hours of the night and some even operate 24/7.

A series of events have been planned this year to entice tourists.

The 12th Festival of Pacific Arts, featuring artists from 27 different Pacific island countries and territories, will be held from May 22-June 4. Visitors can engage performers, artists and cultural practitioners.

The Guam International Marathon runs on April 10.

The island is becoming a haven for more extreme sports, especially skydiving.

"Each tourist gets a personal attendant trainer to jump with them to ensure safety," Laguana says.

"They will be tied to the trainer, who will capture and film everything about you once you jump off the plane. So everyone will get that film after the daredevil experience for remembrance."

But it's not only the thrill of leaping from, but also the ease of hopping aboard, planes that's bringing more Chinese to Guam.
