In the women's competitions, China's Peng Shuai, who has slipped to world No 37, became the only Chinese player to reach the third round with a victory over 25th seed Suarez Navarro of Spain 6-2, 6-2.

Victoria Azarenka, the 2013 finalist, beat Elena Vesnina 6-3, 6-3. British sixth seed Johanna Konta beat Croatian Donna Vekic, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 10-8.

Five-time champion Venus Williams fought back from one set down to beat Wang Qiang of China 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, while little known American Madison Brengle shocked two-time champion Petra Kvitova 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.

The 11th-seeded Kvitova, recovering from hand injuries following a home intrusion six months ago, was apparently not in good form, seen by the doctor on court in the closing stages before taking the loss in hot London conditions.

Second seed Simona Halep beat Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia 7-4, 6-3 while fourth seed Elina Svitolina dismissed Francesca Schiavone 6-3, 6-0.
