The Orientation Ceremony for New Students of Shanghai International College of Intellectual Property (SICIP) was held at Tongji University, on Sept 18, 2018.

Joe Bradley, the head of Academic Institutions Program of WIPO Academy; Chikowore, counselor of Academic Institutions Program of WIPO Academy; Yang Chengrui, head of the International Cooperation Department at the National Intellectual Property Administration; Ji Xiaoye, deputy director of Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration, and Lei Xinghui, vice-president of Tongji University were invited to attend the ceremony.

A total of 48 students from 17 countries participated in the ceremony, which was hosted by Li Jianchang, chairman of the College Council of SICIP.

On behalf of Tongji University, Lei Xinghui welcomed all the new students of 2018. He went on to introduce the development and history of IP as an academic subject at Tongji University.

Early in 2003, Tongji University has already made plans to establish the College of Intellectual Property. In order to further implement the strategy of China becoming a powerful center for IP, and to support the strategy of Shanghai constructing the global influential science innovation center and Asia-Pacific IP center.

Yang Chengrui sent his best wishes to all the students, expressing his hopes that every student would cherish the opportunity to study at SICIP, Tongji University, and make full use of the teaching platform and resources.

Yang said that international students can learn about Chinese culture while they study. In the end he made an interpretation of the word “Tongji”. That is: the “tong” means to collaborate, and “ji” means to overcome difficulties and achieve common goals. He urged students of SICIP to join together and create a bright future.

Ji Xiaoye expressed his hopes that under the guidance of WIPO and CNIPA, and with the support of Tongji University, SICIP could held set international standards, further concentrate finite resources, improve the management of the school, optimize the curriculum, expedite the construction of a global influential platform for IP professionals and high-end think tanks –– making new contributions to serving and supporting the Belt and Road Initiative, building China into an innovation-focused nation, and turning Shanghai into a truly global city.

Professor Li Mingde put forward three important aspects of conducting IP research. First, it is crucial to learn about the international treaties and regulations of IP, because they are the discipline’s foundation stone. Second, is to focus on technological development as IP is closely concerned with innovation, so the progress in technology will promote the development of IP protection. The third is that IP rights are becoming increasingly important in the international market. As a newborn product of the market economy, IP protection will play a significant role in future market competition.

He Yicheng, a Chinese student delegate of the WIPO program, and Aikaterini Kanellia , an international student delegate of The Belt and Road program, expressed their gratitude toward the superior teaching resources of the college and their expectation of future study in their speeches.

Tongji University is the only domestic university which cooperates with WIPO under the joint master program, and the only department which undertakes the master program from the Ministry of Education and CNIPA on The Belt and Road Chinese government IP scholarship, and through filing at the Office of Academic Degree of State Council, SICIP successfully instituted its inter-disciplinary doctoral program. Utilizing world-class teaching resources in the IP field, SICIP is committed to building a world-class cultivation platform for IP professionals, an IP scientific research center, and an IP think tank. At present, SICIP is one of the successful models of domestic internationalized schooling in IP.
