Guangzhou-Russia trade route on the right track

Updated: 2016-11-29 15:26

After almost three months and 11 trips, the direct freight train from Guangzhou to the city of Kaluga in western Russia is proving to be a prosperous trade channel for Chinese exports.

The freight train, which first pulled out of the station on Aug 28, has delivered some 2,355 tons of goods worth 233.55 million yuan ($33.88 million), according to the entry-exit inspection and quarantine bureau at Tianhe Port, Guangzhou.

Departing once a week, the train carries a vast range of products, from ceramics and clothes, to woks and plastic toys.

The entry-exit inspection and quarantine bureau has supported the rail freight by providing convenient customs clearance procedures.

To further expand into overseas markets, the Guangzhou government has said it will provide more advice and guides for local companies wanting to export.

The current trade route mainly targets Russia, however Guangzhou plans to have routes across most of Europe by the end of 2017.
